This textile shows Maita’s innovative, creative flair in taking traditional designs once used in refugee camp craft workshops and varying the yarn color a great deal. Lime green, pinks, and light blues caught her fancy and she created this jaunty cloth on her home loom by her sunlit window. In other cloths Maita follows the craft workshop design for the overall textile field but uses strikingly unorthodox thread colors: deep, shiny purples and intense forest greens, for instance. Her weaving work is intensely regular and tight, with careful counting of threads as she moves from motif to motif. Her distinctive supplemental weft abstract motifs often march across the textile field. In fact, abstract is a hallmark of her excellent work.
